Jordan HARANG (RUSS), VIRTUS, La Flèche (Sarthe)
The city’s request was to reference local heritage. Here, the artist chose to depict the Chapel of Notre-Dame des Vertus, the oldest edifice in the city. However, it’s represented in a unique way: upside down (mirrored) and without a cross. The intention is not religious but rather historical and symbolic. La Flèche was known for having one of the highest numbers of religious edifices in France at one point in time (churches, chapels, basilicas, etc.), even earning the nickname “Sainte-Flèche.”
Additionally, water plays a significant role in the city, with the Loir River and numerous streams. The composition partially submerges itself in a body of water, upon which a “fûtreau,” a traditional and typical regional boat, gracefully navigates.
The rest of the mural speaks of a surreal world, with organic, vegetal, and cloud-like elements, hinting at ascension, energy, flow, and coexisting parallel universes. Interpretation, as is often the case, is not fixed.
