In this exhibition, as in our recent works with murals, we explore the entangled connection that relate humankind to nature, and so, in an artificial but unavoidable way, human habits to the environment.

There’s a focus on the very delicate and often invisible point of balance that still lasts despite the distorted human systems and their distance from a natural health, intended for the planet and for humankind itself. There’s the aim to highlight the importance of all the parts in the overall system, the search for proportions, and the unintentional helplessness of those who find themselves on the unlucky side of the scale.

“Overlap” is a concept that’s deeply connected to everything we realized in the recent years. It is a simple word that contains and resumes many aspects and as well the contrasts we often want to express. It’s a stratification in time, it is natural change, but it is also a forced superimposition. It is putting one thing above another, choosing a scale of value, but it is also corresponds, coincides, coexists on the same space. It is to cover, hide, but also to strengthen, highlight, protect, add.

About the “Surfaces” project:

This is the evolution of a project we realized during the first lockdown of COVID-19 (April 2020), when we were forced to work in separated places. The first idea we developed was just symbolic and related to two persons (us): a shared sculpture built and existing (in its parts) in separated places, an artwork that’s divided, but comes together despite the distance (https://nevercrew.com/surfaces).

Since years we work on the decomposition of elements and their connection within a common balance (as in our mechanisms, in certain subjects, but also as a way to conceive our works), so this aspect of our work assumed a new perspective in a period where circumstances obligated everyone to stay separate and interact remotely.
We felt that in that moment, links and connections became more visible, precisely because the were resisting to the distance, and as well became more evident the connection of a whole humankind, geographically and culturally distant and heterogeneous, but facing the same situation in the same moment.

Moreover, this same unusual global situation, for a little moment. highlighted also how nature reacts to the global balance that humankind imposes to the planet. So, on one side we had a potential planetary empathy and the quick evolution of new structures, and on the other side, also the demonstration about how direct the relationship between humankind and nature is (thinking both at the virus destroying the balance of the worldwide economy and, as for example, as animals returning in some places just because people weren’t there for a few weeks).

We then decided to expand the first idea outside two persons, and so we created a sculpture that’s made by 12 different layers ideally coming from different materials, places, sculptures (8 parts for the whale and 4 parts for the base. We put those 12 different surfaces in connection between them to create a shape, that’s as well showing a relation between
a living being and its habitat.

A “surface” is the meeting point of two realities. A line that divides and connects adjacent or distant spaces: the surface of water, the skin of a whale, the glass of a smartphone screen. It could be a border, but it is also something to have in common; a blank sheet on which to express something or a window from which to see through. So here we wanted to
symbolically recall, on a wider look, the relation that’s between everything in the global balance and, on a closer look, a connection that exists between people, their spaces, their thoughts, their actions.
